Our clients' brief
The over-arching goal here was to transform this generous rooftop space into a natural oasis that would be well-used and enjoyed by residents in a variety of ways.
Our design response
This apartment building's fantastic central Auckland location, being both by the water and looking back towards the hills, led us towards the nature-inspired design theme of a braided river, a particularly special feature of the New Zealand landscape.
The flowing organic construct of a braided river guides you through the garden's various zones and its curves also soften and complement the existing linear sleeper design that underpins the roof-top layout.
Our planting proposal follows this flowing trajectory with selections to suit partial shade and full sun areas, blending seamlessly from shady lush planting through to grasses and more textural coastal plant selections elsewhere. Generous sweeps of plants define multiple zones with a focus on layering, texture, tone, planting seasonality and edible components.
Throughout this design, our material suggestions are tactile and predominantly natural in both texture and visual appeal including macrocarpa sleepers, gravel and shell infill, and gabion rock seating.
This concept has been approved by the body corporate to progress to a phased implementation.
